Is the problem the company or the job?

One of the most important truths that I can share, when thinking about whether you are satisfied with the work you do, whether or not you find joy in the actual tasks you complete, and the skills you use, greatly depends on who you are working for and with.

For most people, the reason they hate their work is because their boss is terrible, the company culture is soul-sucking and toxic, or you feel undervalued, overworked and treated with disrespect or disdain.

What if I told you, you could be doing the same job you are today at a different company or project/client, and you’d miss it when you’re gone. So many people put too much emphasis on trying to solve their problem of WHAT they do without wondering if the issue with WHERE they’re doing it.

Ask yourself the following questions:

  • Do you feel your work is valued?
  • Are you able to grow in your current job?
  • If you could advance in your current company, would you?
  • Do you admire the people you report to?
  • Are you still learning at your job?
  • Do you believe in the company’s mission?
  • Are your concerns about projects or issues heard? Are they resolved?

If you answered NO to more than 3 of the above questions, and you value the work you do, the problem is most likely with the company, not the job.
