There are just 10 basic values

Today, I just want to share this amazing post from Chris Bailey

In summary, the concept of values encompasses broad, desirable goals guiding individuals’ lives, reflecting their core beliefs and priorities. Among the shared values across societies, benevolence and self-direction stand out, with an emphasis on caring for others over dominating them. Shalom Schwartz’s theory highlights 10 fundamental human values, including self-direction, stimulation, hedonism, achievement, power, security, conformity, tradition, benevolence, and universalism.

Each of these basic values encompasses various sub-values, offering a nuanced understanding of individuals’ priorities. Value conflicts can arise between opposing values, while complementary values are often found adjacent to each other. Research indicates that personal values tend to remain consistent over time, with even young children exhibiting the 10 basic values identified by Schwartz. Reflecting on these foundational values, a powerful tool for self-discovery can aid individuals in establishing a deeper connection with themselves and their guiding principles in life.

Self-direction is my top value because I value my ability to achieve something for myself, even if others don’t know about it.
